Cyber-attack ‘Rocks’ The Jewellery Industry

8 November 2021by Abdallah Alhajeid

High profile data breaches continue to dominate the headlines. With cybercriminals becoming bolder and targeting more large, multinational corporations, businesses need to be prepared for the inevitability of experiencing a cyber-attack.

The most recent of these data breaches affected jewellery firm Graff, one of the world’s leading suppliers of diamond jewellery. Russian cybercrime gang Conti carried out the attack, which enabled them to steal millions of records on some of the world’s richest and most powerful people.

Following the attack, they leaked 69,000 confidential documents to the dark web. These documents included client lists, invoices, receipts and much more, which directly linked the individuals named to potentially sensitive transactions.

This leak has enabled the hackers to demand tens of millions of pounds from Graff as a ransom. If unpaid, they are threatening to release the entire trove of documents, which could entirely destabilise Graff as a company.

Another cyber-attack of this size has understandably worried a lot of organisations. These kinds of attacks continue to demonstrate that no organisations are immune to these attacks, regardless of how big they are. Cybercriminals are constantly evolving the way they carry out these attacks, meaning that businesses must be incredibly agile in the way they approach their informational security.

How can these types of attacks be prevented?

Investment in advanced and evolving cyber security is the best way to prevent cyber-attacks. To properly combat cybercriminals, your cyber security system must evolve just as fast as their attacks do.

A detection and response solution is vital for modern organisations, which will often deal with enormous amounts of internet traffic daily. CYBERSHIELD XDR 360 is the perfect example of this. As a solution, it leverages AI, machine learning, and cyber security experts to monitor and protect an organisation from cyber-attacks 24/7.

Many organisations also rely on a variety of web applications for their day-to-day business. For cybercriminals, these are often an easy target to breach an organisation’s security. By utilising a solution like a web-access firewall (WAF), you can secure your web applications and greatly reduce the risk of these applications being the Achilles heel of your informational security.

Regularly testing and reviewing your cyber security systems is also essential. Penetration testing is the easiest way to identify vulnerabilities as it simulates a cyber-attack, utilising many of the same methods that cybercriminals use. These vulnerabilities can then be remedied, making your system more secure.

These are just a few examples of solutions that can help to prevent cyber-attacks. Crucially, organisations need to have a variety of cyber security solutions that protect every aspect of their system. The days of a simple firewall providing all the protection you need are long gone.
