As our lives become more intertwined with the internet, the importance of cyber security has never been greater. With cyber criminals becoming more sophisticated and more relentless, it is crucial that young people understand how to protect themselves and their personal data.
To address that need, Wizard Cyber held a presentation for the students of Al Mashrek School. The session focused on the basics of cyber security, the importance of protecting personal data, and the role of social media in exposing users to hacking and scamming attempts. Students were also taken through the warning signs of cyber threats and the measures they can take to stay safe online.

The presentation opened with an introduction to the field. Wizard Cyber's experts emphasised that everyone is a potential target, regardless of age or occupation, and stressed the need to adopt safe online habits and stay vigilant when sharing personal information.
The role of social media
Social media platforms have become fertile ground for attackers, because of the wealth of personal information available on them. The presenters walked through the tactics criminals use to reach personal accounts: phishing, social engineering and malware.
Warning signs and red flags
To help students recognise a threat, the session highlighted several signals worth treating as suspicious:
- Unsolicited messages from unknown sources
- Requests for personal information or login credentials
- Unexpected emails or notifications, especially those containing links or attachments
- Offers or promotions that look too good to be true
Staying safe online
Students were given practical measures they can apply straight away:
- Use strong, unique passwords for every account, and enable two-factor authentication.
- Be cautious clicking links or downloading attachments from unknown sources.
- Update software and operating systems regularly, to close known vulnerabilities.
- Protect personal information on social media by adjusting privacy settings and thinking about what is shared.
- Keep learning about current threats and good practice.
